This year is gearing up to pack a punch in global sports, which is great news for hot dog and sports fans alike! From the rugby league World Cup to the Ashes and the American baseball season, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to attend live events, or even hold your own hot dog parties while watching the action on the big screen. Rugby league season
The NRL season launches in March, starting with the Sharks versus Broncos at Southern Cross Group Stadium. Whether you’re a Bulldogs, Rabbitohs, Cowboys or Roosters fan, nothing says ‘footy’ like your favourite hot dog, slathered in delicious relishes. Just make sure you finish cheering before you take a bite.
Formula 1, Albert Park
The 2017 Australian Grand Prix roars into Melbourne from March 23 to 26. Hit the track to see some of the world’s top drivers in action. You can expect to see Australian Daniel Ricciardo battle it out with Lewis Hamilton, Marcus Ericsson, Carlos Sainz and more. It’s going to be a high-speed ride, so hold on to your dogs!
Major league baseball season
If you happen to be heading to America this year, you’ll find it hard not to stumble into a hot dog cart during the major league baseball season. 2016 winners the Chicago Cubs open proceedings on April 3, taking on the Cardinals. Not going that far to watch the baseball? Celebrate the season with your own baseball event in the backyard.
State of Origin
Whether you’re a ‘mighty blues’ fan, a Queenslander or just happy to get in on the footy action, the State of Origin is one of the highlights of the NRL season. Game one will set Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on fire in May, with Sydney’s ANZ Stadium hosting the second. You’ll have to wait until July to see the decider, but the three games mean three great excuses for match hot dog parties!
Bathurst 1000
Descending on Mount Panorama for the October Bathurst 1000 is a bucket list act for mad motorsports fans eager to see who will be crowned ‘King of the Mountain’. The winners are awarded the Peter Brock Trophy, named after the legendary Australian driver. The famous circuit boasts a mix of dangerous curves and fast straights, where cars can reach speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour.
The rugby league World Cup
The world’s best rugby league players will converge on Australia and New Zealand from October to December for the World Cup. Football fanatics raise the roof to the sounds of the haka, passionate cheers and epic goals. This year’s event starts with Australia battling England at the Rectangular Stadium in Melbourne.
The Ashes
November seems a long time to wait for your fix of the Ashes and hot dogs. But, as England and Australia will meet in a day-night test at the Gabba first up, it’ll be worth it. Melbourne and Sydney will host the traditional Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests.
